Ready to get off the tools, but stay in the field?

  • Tight-knit, passionate, hard-working team
  • Training and development to grow your career
  • Local company. Local people.
  • Full time permanent hours

SouthRoads Ltd is a progressive civil construction and maintenance contractor with deep Southland and Otago roots. With one of the most modern construction fleets in New Zealand, we proudly support local communities and deliver high-quality roading and civil works across the region.

As part of the Southland Integrated Delivery Contract (IDC), NZTA's operating model for maintaining and renewing the state highway network, we're expanding our team and looking for a dedicated Network Inspector to join us.

About the Opportunity

If you've built your career on the tools in roading or civil construction and are ready for your next step, this could be the move you've been waiting for.

This role gets you out on the network every day without the physical demands of hands-on labour. You'll use your practical experience to identify issues, assess defects, and ensure the state highway network is maintained to the highest standards.

You'll be the "eyes and ears" of the network playing a critical role in safety, compliance, and long-term asset performance.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Carrying out scheduled inspections across the Southland state highway network
  • Directing the crew teams to ensure inspection fequencies are met
  • Incident reporting, along with identifying, assessing, and prioritising faults and safety hazards
  • Recording defects accurately in systems such as AWM, RAMM, or Pocket RAMM
  • Capturing clear evidence including photos, measurements, and condition notes
  • Working closely with Operations, Supervisors, and field crews to ensure work is delivered to specification
  • Supporting performance outcomes under the IDC contract

This is a role where your experience counts. You'll know what "right" looks like, and you'll help make sure it happens.

Who This Role Will Suit

You'll likely come from a background such as:

  • Roading or highway maintenance crew
  • Civil construction labourer or operator
  • Leading hand or foreperson
  • STMS or traffic management
  • Drainage or pavement maintenance

You understand how infrastructure performs in real-world conditions. You can spot a problem early, and take pride in quality work and strong safety practices.

Most importantly, you're ready to take the next step applying your field knowledge in a more structured, inspection and compliance-focused role.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience in roading, civil construction, or network maintenance
  • Strong attention to detail and confidence working independently
  • A proactive, organised approach
  • A genuine commitment to Zero Harm
  • Full Class 1 driver licence

If you enjoy working outdoors, value high standards, and want a role where the Southland state highway network is your office we want to hear from you.

Why Join SouthRoads?

  • Be part of a supportive, locally focused team
  • Work for a respected, long-standing Southland and Otago contractor
  • Real career development and progression opportunities
  • Stability as part of the HW Richardson Group
  • Contribute to one of New Zealand's most significant long-term maintenance contracts

SouthRoads has a rigorous drug and alcohol policy; all appointees must pass a pre-employment drug test and medical.
